Blues, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Rock and More: 11 Events This Weekend

No matter the gray skies or chilly temperatures, there's always reason to celebrate the weekend. Here's our pick  of some cool things to do over the weekend that will hopefully make Monday more palatable.  

Friday

Royal Oak Market: An art show takes place indoors until 8 p.m. 211 S Williams St. (248) 246-3000.

Detroit Christmas Tree Lighting: This 14-year tradition at Campus Martius downtown includes a performance by U.S. Olympic medalist Jeremy Abbott and rock from Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas. 5 p.m. to midnight (tree lighting just before 8 p.m.)

Thornetta Davis: Detroit's "queen of blues" sings at 9 and 10 p.m. at Beacon Park downtown, with free shuttles to and from Campus Martius every 15 minutes. Info.

Ink Up!: Signal-Return’s sixth annual fundraiser inside and outside its Eastern Market studio. Third Man Records, a co-host, provides rare recordings, printed ephemera and other goodies. 6-10 p.m. Info.

Red Bull House of Art: Resident artists exhibit opening from 7-10 p.m. features feature the work of Judith Supine, Julie Schenkelberg. and Lucien Shapiro. Music by Secret Shower. 1551 Winder in the Eastern Market. Info

Detroit Red Wings: The fourth-place Wings square off against the Buffalo Sabres at 7:30 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena. Even if the Red Wings are mediocre, it's worth checking out their new home. Tickets: $49 to way more.

Saturday

"A Revolutionary Look at Hip Hop:" This musical lecture dives deep into the history of revolutionary black music. Public Enemy's Professor Griff speaks while DJ Terminator X provides context through the music. "Party with a purpose," says MOCAD, 4454 Woodward Ave., Detroit. 5 p.m. Info.

Ste. Anne's Church jazz: Dafinis Prieto Sextet is led by a Cuban-born drummer who blends Afro-Cuban folk music, the European classical tradition and post-bop jazz improvisation. $27. Info

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas:" Fox Theatre. Times: Fri. 7:30 p.m. Sat. 2 p.m., 5 p.m., 8 p.m. Sun. 1 p.m., 5 p.m. Tickets $55-$173. 

"Streetcar Named Desire:" Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer-winning drama is at the Hillberry Theatre on Cass Avenue in Detroit's Midtown. Fri. 8 p.m., Sat. 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sun. 3 p.m. Tickets: $12 for students. $22 for seniors. $27 for regular admission. Tickets

"Who Will Sing for Lena?" This one-woman play runs through Dec. 10. It gives voice to Lena Baker, who, in 1944 Georgia, killed her abusive, white employer in self-defense. Using trial transcripts, the play dramatically lays out the motivations for her actions, telling the story of her abuse, the killing, her trial and execution.
