Dan Gilbert continues to have an insatiable appetite for buying property.
The Detroit Housing Commission plans to sell the vacant site of the former Brewster-Douglass housing projects for $23 million to an affiliate of Gilbert's Bedrock LLC for development of what would likely be hundreds of new residential units, reports Kirk Pinho of Crain's Detroit Business.
The 18 acres south of Mack Avenue and west of I-75 would be the largest swath of land under control of Gilbert, who has been on an aggressive push to snap up properties in the downtown area in the past several years.
"Bedrock is excited about this opportunity and looking forward to working closely with the Detroit Housing Commission and the City of Detroit to transform this vacant site into a mixed-use neighborhood for all Detroiters," Jim Ketai, CEO of Bedrock, says in a statement to Crain's.
