Here's a chance to taste true home cooking by soul food standouts.

Six groups compete Friday for the title of "Cast Iron Queen of Detroit" in Eastern Market. The public event begins at 7 p.m. on the third floor of 2501 Russell St.

The event -- "Put Ya Mama Where Ya Mouth Is!" -- pits multi-generation groups against each other. The elders will cook tasty soul food at their homes and the children, nieces, nephews or grandkids  will do the plating and table presentation.

Each team will prepare a side dish like macaroni and cheese, greens or yams to dish out in 200-300 servings.

Attendees will vote on the winner, who gets $500.

Admission is $30, which covers a sample of each dish, plus dinner from Savannah Blue and a cash bar.

Kwaku Osei-Bonsu and Lauren Bates, organizers of the first local Black Restaurant Week in August, are behind this.
