Police have identified Wolverine Lake City Councilman Michael Stack as the person who was driving the wrong way Tuesday on I-275 in Canton Township and killed two people, Mark Cavitt of The Oakland Press reports.

The Village of Wolverine Lake confirms Stack is the driver and issues a statement:

"[We] have received credible information that Wolverine Lake resident and Council Member Mike Stack was involved in an accident on I-275 in Canton Township on Tuesday and was treated for injuries.

"We are heartbroken over the loss of life in this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected and their loved ones."

The elected official was traveling south on northbound I-275 near Palmer Road, police say, when he struck another vehicle, killing its driver and passenger -- and engaged couple. Police suspect alcohol played a role.

He was briefly hospitalized and released. The investigation is ongoing and Stack has not been charged.
