Mayor Mike Duggan backs a city council ally, President Brenda Jones, to replace Congressman John Conyers, who stepped down Dec. 5 amid allegations of staff sexual harassment, Rochelle Riley of the Detroit Free Press reports.

"The mayor's endorsement from the city of Detroit is so important, and it's great to share his endorsement with the other major endorsements that I have," Jones says just hours before a 5 p.m. press conference. She plans to announce other supporters.

"The mayor and I have shown that we can have a great working relationship because we both have the same ideals and thoughts of great things that can happen to move this city forward," she adds.

It's hard to gauge how much of difference endorsements make in an election, but considering Duggan won re-election in November by a landslide, it can't hurt.
