Gallery: A Taste of New York City Comes to Detroit's Fisher Building
February 17th, 2018, 8:20 AM
Less than a month ago, City Bakery opened in the Fisher Building on West Grand Boulevard -- its first U.S. shop beyond the New York City base.
The bakery is known for pretzel croissants and homemade hot chocolate and marshmallows delivered in blue and white-branded cups. Owner Maury Rubin operates eight locations in Japan and five in New York, including the flagship that opened in 1990 in the Flatiron District of Lower Manhattan.
"It's obvious Detroit is undergoing a Renaissance and he wanted to be a part of it," says Staceyjoy Elkin, a New Yorker who manages the new site. It's open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for breakfast, lunch and desserts. There are plans to open for Fisher Theatre audiences.
The menu has mostly vegetarian dishes and sandwiches, including grilled cheese. There's also a turkey slider with white cheddar cheese on a pretzel bun.
We stopped by the other day for a bite and take a look. And yes, the pretzel croissant measures up to the melt-in-your-mouth hype.
