The grand Vanity Ballroom opened in 1929 on Detroit's far east side at Jefferson and Newport in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood. At first, the big bands played there. Later, it hosted the MC5, The Stooges, Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, among other rock legends.

It shut in 1988 as the neighborhood declined. Now, a push is being made to rejuvenate the neighborhood around the fromer ballroom with help from Joshua Elling, executive director of Jefferson East Inc.

It's another example of businesses opening in a neighborhood outside of the popular Midtown and downtown districts.

CGTN America, a division of international language news channels run by Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television, reports on the new development in this video.
