You might recall that Jayru Campbell managed to turn success to failure back when he was a star quarterback for Cass Tech High School in Detroit.

First, he was arrested for body slamming a school security guard in January 2014. Ten months later, he was arrested for a domestic violence incident involving his then-girlfriend. He ended up spending time in jail.

He was originally destined to play for Michigan State University, but that fell through. He was deemed untouchable by Big Ten athletic directors.

Now he's all business since transferring to Ferris State University in Big Rapids last August after leading Garden City Community College in Kansas to a national championship in 2016, reports Brandon Folsom for the Detroit Free Press. He redshirted in the fall but is now in competition with returning starter Travis Russell (Grand Rapids West Catholic) and Division I transfer Bret Mooney (Colgate) for starting quarterback.

"First off, he's a born leader, so he's drawn our guys in quite a bit," Ferris State coach Tony Annese tells the Freep. "He hangs around our best high-character guys, so that's cool. Sometimes quarterbacks usually hang out in small groups. Not him. Sometimes he hangs out with the O-linemen or the D-linemen. He's very good at that."

"He's highly competitive, so that brings a lot of energy to the table," Annese said. "Guys know they better be bringing it every day or Jayru will be after them a little bit, so that's great. He's what you want out of a quarterback when it comes to those kinds of things."
