Back in October 2016, after the famous Billy Bush tape surfaced, Attorney General Bill Schuette made it clear that he still backed Donald Trump for president.

While he was critical of Trump's sexual remarks, he said: “I’m not going to give Hillary Clinton the master key to the United States Supreme Court.” Conversely, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley said: “The latest revelations about Donald Trump and his past make it impossible for me to maintain support of him.”

On Wednesday night, during a debate in Grand Rapids among Republican candidates for governor, Schuette, who leads in the polls among the GOP candidates, repeatedly touted his endorsement from Trump, reports Jonathan Oosting and Beth LeBlanc of  The Detroit News.

“Trump endorsed me for governor because he knows I’ll cut taxes in Michigan just like he cut taxes across the country,” Schuette said.

Time will tell how Trump's endorsement plays out in the primary election.

Schuette and Calley also went at it over Flint. “The Flint water crisis has been politicized,” said Calley. “The attorney general has used it as though it is some kind of launching pad for a campaign for governor.”

Schuette said  the prosecution in Flint is about justice and accountability.

“You’re desperate because you’re behind,” Schuette told Calley.
