Running back Billy Sims was magical on the field during his five-year career with the Detroit Lions. Then on Oct. 21, 2984, his career ended with a catastrophic right knee injury while playing the Minnesota Vikings.

He went on to open dozens of Billy Sims Barbecue restaurant franchises around the country including in Metro Detroit with co-founder Jeff Jackson.

Now, the man has resurfaced in what some might find an unlikely situation: He's endorsing state Sen. Coleman A. Young II for Congress.

“Politics and football have much in common; both require agility, teamwork and vision,” Sims said in a statement issued in a press release. “Coleman was able to develop these skills at an early age as a high school and college running back, skills that have served him well as a State Legislator. His track record of leading on vital issues, such as equal access to health care, women's issues and jobs creation is unmatched. I strongly support Coleman A. Young II for Congress!”
