The Detroit Zoo has talked about building an aquarium  alongside Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit, but Mayor Mike Duggan says the idea isn't a good one.

“I don’t know where that aquarium site came from,” Duggan tells The Detroit News. “I don’t think downtown makes any sense."

Zoo director Ron Kagan recently floated the idea of building the facility on the former location of Ford Auditorium, which was leveled seven years ago, reports Neal Rubin and Louis Aguilar of The Detroit News:

That idea appears to have foundered at city hall amid concerns that the land might find a better use, and that its close confines could leave visitors packed like sardines.

“I think an aquarium could work on the east or west riverfront,” Duggan says.

The aquarium would be in addition to the one at Belle Isle.
