Lafayette West: A Novi Builder's $108 Million of Faith in Detroit Housing

July 03, 2018, 7:49 AM by  Allan Lengel

Talk about faith in Detroit's future, catch this: A 12-story tower with 374 residences is coming to the Lafayette Park neighborhood on downtown's eastern edge.

The project, Lafayette West, will have lofts, townhouses, flats and apartments for rent and sale. At least 75 of the rental units will have "affordable rents" for moderate-income tenants, the city announces.

“As Detroit’s recovery continues, we want to make sure big developments like Lafayette West benefit not just new residents, but also the people of Detroit who have stayed through the good times and the bad,” mayoral aide Arthur Jemison says in a statement.

“From hiring Detroiters for construction and funding workforce training programs, to providing affordable housing, to convening neighbors to negotiate benefits for the community, we are working to ensure Detroit’s recovery works for everybody.”

Ginosko Development Company of Novi is investing $108 million to erect the high-rise on 5.2 acres between I-375 and Rivard Street, where the vacant Shapero Hall will be demolished.

Lafayette West will have 114 apartments and attached parking, 200 rental lofts and 60 for-sale townhouses, carriage houses and stacked flats with attached garages.
