Ex-Tigers ace Justin Verlander is one of the best pitchers in baseball. The Tigers aren't very good this year.

So, most assumed Verlander would easily claim victory Sunday in Houston, but the Tigers tagged him with four homers and beat Houston 6-3.

Anthony Fenech, reporting at the Detroit Free Press site from Houston, shares some sweet savoring by the winners:

“It was big for our baseball team," [manager Ron] Gardenhire said. "Going up against Mr. Verlander, golly, he’s the best pitcher we’ve seen around here in a long, long time. It was huge."

"Huge," Nicholas Castellanos said. "Just huge."

Earlier, Castellanos says, razzing flowed the Detroit dugout:

"We were just giving him crap," Castellanos said. "It was good."

Verlander did show some of his power. He struck out 12 , but gave up six runs, the most this season.

The Tigers are 41-57.
