The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is considering a new contract to have the Grand Prix remain on Belle Isle. It's a controversial issue.

Some park-lovers consider it an intrusion, insisting it violates the spirit of the park. Others say it's the only place in the city that makes sense and it helps showcase Detroit.

Nolan Finley, The Detroit News' editorial page editor, thinks advantages of racing at Belle Isle outweigh the drawbacks:

The Grand Prix has brought $13 million in investment to Belle Isle.

But even more valuable is the terrific national exposure the race brings to Detroit. The television camera angles of the city during the race are gorgeous.

This should be an easy call for the DNR. Approve the extension and keep the race on Belle Isle. And keep working with the Grand Prix to lessen its impact on recreational uses of the island.
