Detroit Councilman Gabe Leland reportedly has conflicts of interests. Now a federal grand jury is looking into his activities, which include allegations he extorted thousands of dollars in free alcohol, food and other items in exchange for poltical favors, according to a subpoena obtained by the Detroit Free Press.
The issue involves a downtown Detroit bar. An Aug 8. subpoena from Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Michael Bullotta seeks documents related to Leland possibly getting:
- Free entry to parties or events.
- Free alcoholic drinks or other beverages.
- Free entrees, appetizers and desserts.
- Other items of value provided free or at discounts.
His attorney, Steve Fishman, said in a statement to the Free Press that allegations thatthe councilman got preferential treatment from a bar owner "are too ridiculous to deserve further comment."
