Ex-Chrysler Exec Gets 5.5 Years in Prison

Alphons Iacobelli admitted conspiring to violate the Labor Management Relations Act and filing a false tax return.

Ex-Chrysler executive Alphons Iacobelli, who bought a backyard pool and Ferrari with money siphoned during a conspiracy involving the automaker and the United Auto Workers, is off to prison.

U.S. District Judge Paul Borman in Detroit sentenced Iacobelli to 5.5 years in prison in a case that has resutled in seven convictions writes Robert Snell of The Detroit News. Besides stealing money himself, Iacobelli admitted paying more than $1.5 million to UAW officers and employees to influence union contract negotiations.The money was often spent on travel and luxury items.

Iacobelli, 59, of Rochester Hills had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the Labor Management Relations Act and one count of a false tax return.

"It is difficult to imagine a more egregious offense and a more impactful offense of corrupting the labor management process," Judge Borman said during sentencing.conspiracy to violate the Labor Management Relations Act and one count of a false tax return.
