Aretha Franklin on "What's My Line?" in 1974.

When Aretha Franklin was 34 more than four decades ago, she appeared on the TV game show "What's My Line?"

Panelists, who on this date included Soupy Sales and Arlene Francis, blindfolded themselves and peppered mystery guests with questions in an effort to guess the identity.

On Sept. 9, 1974, the secret visitor was Franklin. (She appears on the video starting at the 12:19 mark).

The very humble singer answered questions about whether she sang country, opera and rock. They finally got closer, asking if she sang the blues.

Two guesses included Helen Reddy and Hazel Scott. Finally, time had run out. No one guessed correctly.

When Soupy Sales unmasked himself, he blurted: "My favorite, my favorite."

"I have eight of your albums."
