September 14, 2018, 2:15 PM

In what must surely be the most striking waste of two young lives in recent memory, a 17-year-old Fitzgerald High School student is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing of a 16-year-old classmate Wednesday.

The teens were said to be competing over a boy.

Tanaya Lanay Lewis was arraigned in Warren District Court in the death of Danyna Gibson. Lewis allegedly stabbed the victim twice in the chest with a kitchen knife during an economics class. She was taken into custody at the school on 9 Mile and Ryan. Gibson died later in surgery.

Meanwhile, school is back in session Friday. The Freep reports:

[Freshman Devin] Hogan said the school's students are still shocked and continue to talk about it on social media.

“And the friends I've talked to said they're afraid to come,” Devin said.

A GoFundMe account for Gibson's family is raising money for funeral expenses. A dozen donors start the day-old drive, posted by Renee Boyd of Detroit, with $200 in contributions as of mid-afternoon Friday in amonts from $5 to $25.
