The White Boy Rick film was at a disadvantage in ticket sales because it's at 2,504 theaters, compared to the 4,037 for "The Predator," 3,876 for "The Nun" and 3,102 for "A Simple Favor."

Matthew McConaughey, who plays father Richard Wershe Sr. McConaughey, appeared Wednesday night on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" to promote the movie.

The film did slightly better in the opening weekend than director Kathryn Bigelow's film "Detroit," which told the story of the 1967 riot and the murder an brutality at the Algiers Motel. It grossed $7.2 million the first weekend last summer.
