The home is reduced to rubble.

Gas is the presumed cause of a major explosion this morning in a Harper Woods home undergoing renovation, local media are reporting.

The blast, around 11 a.m., leveled the brick ranch house on Lennon Street. Two men who had arrived at the house apparently touched off the explosion, according to The Detroit News.

"We believe one person was opening the door and it caused a spark," (Public Safety Director Jim) Burke said. "Our thinking right now is the house was full of gas, he opened the door and caused the spark. That gentleman on the porch was knocked off the porch onto the lawn.

"His partner was walking up behind him. He was also knocked down on the ground. When our officers arrived, there were two victims on the grass on the front lawn."

Both men were taken to a hospital. Nearby residents said the blast knocked books off shelves.
