State Lawmaker from Detroit Wants Stretch of Lodge Freeway Named for Aretha

There's been talk about naming a school after the late Queen of Soul. And last month, Detroit City Council unanimously approved a resolution to  rename Chene Park after Aretha Franklin.

Now state Rep. Fred Durhal III, D-Detroit, has introduced a bill that calls on the Michigan Department of Transportation to designate a portion of M-10 — from 8 Mile to I-94 — as a memorial to Franklin, reports Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press. 

“The Lodge Freeway was close to her stomping grounds,” he tells the Freep. “Her father’s church is in my district and so she was a staple in the community. We just wanted to make sure we paid the proper tribute to her.”
