New Parthenon Restaurant, a fixture in Greektown for over 40 years, is shut, Brenna Houck of Eater Detroit reports:

A tipster tells Eater that longtime establishment closed for business this week and posts to social media suggest the restaurant is closed permanently. The chairs were up on the tables throughout the restaurant and signs hung in the windows on Tuesday morning confirming that the spot was closed for remodeling.

Reached by Eater, an employee with the restaurant stated that New Parthenon had closed and was consulting with contractors on a remodel. The restaurant is expected to return after a full refresh with the same name and menu.

There was a time when Greektown was one of the few destinations drawing diners downtown, particularly on the weekends.

But in the past six years or so, the competition in downtown and Midtown has become much stiffer, and Greektown at times has struggled to keep its Greek flavor.

Over the past several years, other notable Greektown restaurants -- New Hellas Cafe, Grecian Gardens, Laikon Cafe -- have folded.
