Guest Post: Party Coverage by Freep Hurt an Event 'Meant to Be Kept Low-Key'

October 28, 2018, 9:12 AM

This Facebook post by a Lincoln Street Art Park supporter is shared with permission. The witer reacts to Detroit Free Press coverage (right) that he and others blame for an Oct. 25 police response to an after-hours party at the Northwest Goldberg  sculpture park. It originally was submitted as a comment under the Freep article, he says, but soon disappeared.

After a raid on the art park, it would be great Meira [Gebel] if you would just keep the special Detroit events you find out about to yourself from now on, please.

They are special for a reason. Detroit keeps it quiet so they don't have a bunch of kids running in from suburbs and then having their parents complain about parties in Detroit (especially during an election cycle).

You highlighted something incredibly beautiful that has grown organically for years with the help of many amazing creative people, but in doing so you may have destroyed it by highlighting it at the wrong time to the wrong crowd.

Dj Daley: "Some things are meant to be kept low-key."

It's the same sort of situation as when the "secret" beach at Belle Isle was written about, but this is much worse in my opinion. I hope in the future you can consider your stories and the impact they can have on the real community here.

Old Detroit can’t afford new Detroit. This type of story can potentially take away the places to enjoy freedom on a budget with awesome people in a safe place, where ideas flow, networks grow, artists bloom. They can't do that downtown anywhere anymore.

Some things are meant to be kept low-key to preserve the beauty. Instead of doing a hype article, you could have worked for months with the people at the park. Gotten a real story out of it. Could have . . . got video. Showed what it really was, instead of a short five-minute article for people to unnecessarily freak out over.

You could have spent time to dive deep. All this did was wave a noisy flag.
