Video: Richard Bernstein Talks About Challenges of Being a Blind Judge

December 12, 2018, 10:40 PM by  Allan Lengel

After an interview at our downtown Detroit office on Griswold Street, Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein stood on the sidewalk during rush hour, waiting for his driver.  Taking in sounds of the city, he remarked how great it was that Detroit was coming back. Then he said: "This feels just like Chicago."

Being blind, he doesn't see what many others do. But his awareness of the world around him, and his insights, are pretty remarkable.

And frankly, so is he. He sat with Allan Lengel of Deadline Detroit to talk about a variety of subjects, including the challenges of being a blind judge, what life lessons he learned from his accident with a bicyclist in Central Park in New York, travelling the globe to advocate for changes in laws for the disabled, how he and court colleagues get along and a lot more.

This is the first of two parts of a new feature called "The Chat."
