Curious Gift: Gretchen Whitmer Reacts with Humor to an Item in White House Swag Bag

December 15, 2018, 10:04 AM

Even a statewide election winner can't help feeling like a tourist during her first White House visit as governor-elect.

So Gretchen Whitmer snapped a place-setting shot before meeting with President Trump and other newly elected governors Thursday. She also posed in the driveway and tweeted both photos that afternoon before flying home:

So what's in the swag bag, a Detroit political consultant wonders. The Democratic politician responds graciously and amusingly:

As for the meeting itself, Whitmer says she voiced concerns to Trump and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross about how new tariffs harm this state's automotive and agriculture industries.
The Democratic governor said she talked to Trump about infrastructure, and that he pledged to continue support for upgrading the Soo Locks in the Upper Peninsula, according to The Detroit News.
And then she returned to East Lansing with souvenir cufflinks for Dr. Marc Mallory, her spouse.
