A pickup truck hauling a trailer that contained a Michigan Vietnam veterans' memorial was stolen in Macomb County earlier this week, leaving a local veterans group "heartsick" that it was lost for good. The trailer was recovered in Detroit the day after Christmas, but the Ford F-250 pickup truck remains in the wind.

The Freep reports that the veterans who maintain and transport the memorial don't care about the truck. The trailer was the important part:

For the past several years, members have volunteered to take the memorial, which is 25 feet long when assembled, to car shows, military tributes and various community events. They often meet relatives of the people whose names are on it.

"It’s (an) absolute honor to take this around. ... They paid the ultimate sacrifice, and we don’t ever want them to be forgotten," Mike Schneider, chairman of the Michigan Vietnam Veteran Traveling Memorial and secretary of Chapter 154, said.

The memorial consists of several panels engraved with the names of the 2,654 Michigan residents who died during the Vietnam war. The truck and trailer appears to have been stolen from Chapter 154's veteran support center in Clinton Township sometime earlier in the week.
