A man accused of stealing cars on an almost annual basis over the past decade has attempted to pull off the mother of all vehicle crimes — breaking into cars parked outside the heavily patroled Detroit-Windsor tunnel, then plowing through a security gate and toward border agents during a failed getaway.

WDIV reports Montez Gantz, 27, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison.

Homeland Security agents had to jump out of the way as Montez Gantz plowed through the wooden arm of the parking garage gate toward the federal agents.

Gantz is allegedly a career car thief, with arrests in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017. For this arrest, Gantz chose to steal from one of the worst places you could think of -- the parking garage at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, where local, state and federal police park and patrol 24 hours a day.

Prosecutors said Gantz decided to steal a car inside and, when a suspicious citizen notified Border Patrol, agents swooped in and blocked the exit. Instead of giving up, Gantz backed up and floored it through the gate. Security surveillance photos show the agents literally jumping out of the way.

Gantz reportedly sought leniancy in his sentencing, telling a judge he just became a dad. It didn't help.

It's not clear where Gantz is from, but judging by one of the tattoos logged by the Michigan Department of Corrections, he may be a Detroiter. He has a 7 Mile and Ryan street intersection sign on his right shoulder. Elsewhere on that arm, it says "da block is hot."

Indeed.
