Controversial Wayne County Circuit Judge Vonda Evans on Monday announced her retirement to avoid a suspension, Ross Jones of WXYZ reports.
Evans, who had come under intense scrutiny from WXYZ for her tardiness and absence from the bench, announced her plans to retire on Facebook:
“There comes a time when you have to make a decision. Do we turn to the page or do we close the book?” Evans said in a tearful video posted to her Facebook account.“It’s time now for me to close the book on being your Third Circuit Judge." (See video below.)
Evans, who had served on the bench since 1997, did not specify when she would retire, but said she expected Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to name her replacement.
Evans was facing a suspension from the Judicial Tenure Commission.
