A Pattern of Racist Posting? Detroit Police look into Second Video by Suspended cop

Officer Steele used this Snapchat sticker to caption a post of a black woman walking home after a traffic stop.

The white Detroit police officer who last week made national news for taking to social media to mock a black woman as she walked home in the cold from a traffic stop may have had a pattern of posting racist videos.

According to The Detroit News, the department is looking into whether Officer Gary Steele, currently suspended with pay, may have posted a video making fun of a black family a couple of years ago.

"On the heels of the incident last week, an officer posted in a private Facebook group 'if you think this was bad, the Christmas incident was even worse than that,'" [Detroit Police Chief James Craig] said. "We tracked down the officer, and found he is now working for another law enforcement agency.

"When we reached out to him, he indicated that (Steele) had impounded a car during Christmas two years ago," Craig said. "The kids had gifts, and while the kids were walking home carrying their gifts, [Steele] supposedly made another Snapchat video saying 'walk of shame' and other racially-insensitive remarks."

Steele posted a video of a woman walking in subzero temperatures to Snapchat last week with the stickers "what black girl magic looks like" and "celebrating black history month." He was heard muttering "priceless," "walk of shame," and "bye Felicia." His partner has been suspended with pay as well.

It's union policy to suspend officers with pay, but a vote from the Board of Police Commissioners and a recommendation from Craig can override that.
