Ex-Supreme Court Justice Robert Young.

Sometimes it pays to just be a really lousy, tone-deaf lawyer. Just ask Robert P. Young Jr., the former chief State Supreme Court Justice who was hired by Michigan State University as its general counsel less than a year ago

An MSU spokeswoman confirms to Ross Jones of WXYZ that Young, 67, who was fired last week by acting President Satish Udpa, will get $990,402 for the remainder of his three-year contract.

Nice payoff.

Young, who was hired by former MSU acting President John Engler was accused of:

  • Treating survivors of Nassar's sexual abuse as adversaries during settlement negotiations.
  • Failing to share with trustees a scathing Department of Education report criticizing MSU for repeatedly failing to ensure safety on campus.
  • Of obstructing the attorney general's investigation into who knew what about Nassar.

Young began serving on the state Supreme Court in 1999 and left the job in 2017.
