After a days long countdown of the best new restaurants in metro Detroit in 2019, Free Press food critic Mark Kurlyandchik has unveiled his pick for number one, and it's going to be hard for you to get a taste.

Albena, located in downtown's Siren Hotel, wins the honor. It's an eight-seat "tasting counter serving a playful multi-course tasting menu in a tiny, zen-like space with bar seating right in the kitchen," the food writer says. By the looks of its reservation website, parties of two can secure spots in the 4 or 9 o'clock hours in the next couple of weeks. The tasting menu is $130.

Other restaurants in the top 10 list include West Village's Marrow (No. 2), Midtown's SheWolf (No. 3), and Corktown's Folk (No. 4).

But for Kurlyandchik, the best restaurant in Detroit right now is not a newcomer. It is Corktown restaurant Ima, which opened in 2016. Kurlyandchik makes the case for the ramen and rice bowl spot here.
