Michigan Lawmakers Propose Lifting Cap on Snow Days

February 13, 2019, 9:17 AM by  Violet Ikonomova

As another round of winter weather closes or delays schools throughout the region, a group of Michigan lawmakers is looking to lift a cap on snow days.

Michigan Radio reports that State Rep. Ben Frederick (R-Owosso) will introduce a bill this week to exempt snow days that occur during a state of emergency, like the one called during the polar vortex two weeks ago.

"In the extraordinary event of a state of emergency, schools shouldn't be penalized by having those days count against their bank," he said.

Currently, schools can close for 9-days per year, with waivers for forgiven time off required after 6. As of this morning, 100 Michigan schools had applied for waivers, according to The Detroit News.

Districts tack the days onto the end of the calendar year in order to meet an annual 180 instructional day requirement. Schools that don't make up the snow days risk losing state aid.
