Ah, sports and poetry -- a match made in . . . well, only on Valentine's Day.

Freep columnist Jeff Seidel covers just about every inch of Detroit's and Michigan's bleak sportscape in 19 thorny poems released today in a "card" to readers. Our teams are bad, so the poems are sad, but at least we still have humor in the D.

Here's a taste of two: 

Lament the D

It’s Valentine's Day,
Here comes Cupid
There’s no winning in Detroit
And that is stupid

Violets are (Honolulu) Blue?

The roses are dying,
The violets are wilted,
The Lions played again
Once again, they've been jilted
They need more talent,
That is the lore
Just wait until next year
Yeah, we’ve heard that before
