Michigan State Police have closed their investigation into alleged extortion by Detroit businessman Bob Carmack without taking action, Fox 2 and the Detroit Free Press report.

The investigation was requested late last year by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, after Carmack — who's mired in a property dispute with the city — broadcast video that he said showed Duggan visiting a mistress in the suburbs.

Duggan claimed the tactic was coercive, saying in a news conference that Carmack was angling for a favorable settlement in two lawsuits with the city. According to Duggan, Carmack told the city's top lawyer, “Well you better do something. I’m going to make some noise. I’m going to drop a bomb.”

According to Fox 2, MSP interviewed the mayor, his chief of staff Alexis Wiley, and the lawyer, Lawrence Garcia, before dropping the case. It's closed pending any new evidence, the Freep reports.

Carmack, meanwhile, appears ready to fight back, even as he gets set to go to court on fraud charges stemming from a city land deal. He tells the Freep he plans to lodge a complaint against the mayor for filing a false police report.

“It’s a fabricated story that they put together,” Carmack said on Tuesday.
