The chain first opened in Detroit at the corner of Davison and Shields in 1937. That location closed in the 1980s and the pizzeria expanded to the suburbs.

Earlier coverage, March 12:

Shield's Pizza plans to open its newest outlet in the Wayne State University area by early April.

Owner Norman Mourad, who was at the store Tuesday at 5057 Woodward Ave. near Warren, says he's putting the finishing touches on the place and waiting to pass a final inspection.

Mourad plans to offer corporate delivery. Individuals can use Grubhub.

Shield's, known for its square pizza, originated in Detroit in 1937 at the corner of Davison and Shields, and was considered a serious competitor to the original Buddy's Pizza on Conant in Detroit. Shield's closed that location in the late '80s and expanded in the suburbs.

This is the first shop in Detroit since the flagship shut.
