Walled Lake high school kicks out student shot randomly in Detroit, citing safety concerns

Walled Lake Western High School officials have kicked out a student who was randomly shot in Detroit, reportedly because they're worried about "retaliation," WXYZ reports.

The 17-year-old student, who asked that the station identify him only as Michael, says he was in Detroit dropping off clothes at a friend's house in February when he was shot randomly, a claim confirmed by a police report. Michael says he didn't try to press charges because "I don't know who shot me."

WXYZ reports it was apparently the random nature of the shooting that caused the school to bar Michael from its grounds and activities — meaning he can't attend classes, graduation or prom.

School officials at Walled Lake Western High School say because the Detroit police report states Micheal was randomly shot, they were concerned about retaliation and told Micheal he was going to have a change of education placement.

It's unclear if the suburban school administrators don't believe Michael and Detroit police, or if they simply don't understand the concept of retaliation.

Michael and his family, meanwhile, seem to accept their fate. The family tells WXYZ he'll finish the school year online. They plan to hold their own graduation and then go on vacation.
