Readers' Choice: Coney Dog Egg Rolls and Coney Pasties Are Favorite Spinoffs from a Detroit Classic

Coneys stimulate more than hunger cravings -- they also inspire new taste combos, fresh ways to serve a pure Detroit icon.

Thursday's introduction of coney dog egg rolls at Comerica Park made us wonder how they rank -- the idea, at least -- alongside another offbeat pair of local mashups: coney pasties and coney pączki.

The hybrid egg rolls (top right) will be available at least through Sept. 26, the Tigers' last regular season home game. That's far longer than these limited-time spinoffs:

  • Ackroyd's Scottish Bakery sells coney pasties (bottom right) through April from its Redford shop at 25566 5 Mile Rd. and by mail order. The item, introduced about five years ago "in honor of the Detroit Tigers' baseball season," has a diced-up Dearborn Brand dog, Detroit Chili Co. coney sauce, mustard and cheddar cheese "stuffed it in our handmade puff pastry."
  • American Coney Island once a year serves "a bizarre but beloved franken-food," as Melody Baetens of The Detroit News describes coney pączki, offered on Fat Tuesday since 2017. "A party in your mouth" is how restaurant owner Grace Keros pitches the festival of meat, mustard, onions and chili between halves of a sweetly glazed pastry.

Our unscientific survey -- more like a show of hands in a classroom or two -- reflects fewer than four dozen opinions. The ballpark newcomer edges ahead of bakery pasties by just two votes (20-18).

Three fans pick pączki with everything and four gluttons like or want to try 'em all (not on the same day, we hope).
