Juwan Howard played in the NCAA championship final game in 1992 and 1993.

Michigan is on the verge of hiring "Fab Five" member Juwan Howard to replace John Beilein as the head basketball coach.

While the school plans to move forward, the deal has not been finalized, two sources close to the negotiations tell James Hawkins of The Detroit News.

Howard has worked as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat since 2013.

Athletic director Warde Manuel interviewed Howard in Miami on Tuesday, and an offer was made Wednesday, the News reports.

Howard and teammates Chris Weber Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson were known as the Fab Five. They made up Michigan’s 1991 recruiting class that made history when the Wolverines reached the 1992 NCAA championship game with the freshman quintet as the starting five. They got there again in 1993, when they were sophomores.

Eventually, things soured for the group that got mired in controversy.
