Calvin Johnson shares Madden '13 cover with RenCen, Ford Field

EA Sports released the cover art for Madden ’13, featuring Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, today.

The Madden cover is a double-edge sword. On one hand, making the cover means you are amongst the NFL elite. On the other hand, it seems to foretell injury.

This is purely superstition. Obviously, there is no causal connection between a player’s photograph appearing on a video game box and that player’s ability to stay healthy.

If you’re a Lions fan of science be confident that Megatron’s video game image will cause him no harm. If you are the sort who believes in ouija boards and Dione Warwick’s psychic friends, then fear not because the Madden cover also features Ford Field and the Renaissance Center as well as Calvin Johnson.

So, in addition to a couple downtown landmarks getting national publicity, it’s possible the Madden curse will skip Johnson and afflict Ford Field or the RenCen instead.

Perhaps a freak electrical outage shuts down Ford Field for a few weeks and the Super Bowl-bound Lions (with Calvin catching 125 passes for 1800 yards and 30 touchdowns) will have to play some home games at Comerica Park. Or maybe the RenCen McDonald’s will close.

Of course, it’s doubtful anything bad will actually happen. Because the Madden curse is just a silly myth that makes no rational sense and we’re all too smart to believe in it, right?
