Richard Bernstein, Out of N.Y. Hospital, Is Ready To 'Keep Moving Forward'

Richard BernsteinWell-known local attorney Richard Bernstein is closer to coming home from a Manhattan visit gone bad. He was discharged Monday after 10 weeks at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Bernstien, a personal injury lawyer at a firm founded by his dad ("Call Sam"), is recovering from a broken hip and other injuries caused by a speeding cyclist as the blind Farmington Hills litigator jogged in Central Park. He'll stay in New York for physical therapy, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

He "was hit and face-planted by a cyclist going downhill at about 35 mph --10 mph above the posted limit," writes reporter Ryan Kelly, who spoke to the 38-year-old attorney.

"The biggest challenge is you have to go back into the world and keep moving forward," Bernstein said. "You just have to respect the pain. . . . I have a lot of work to do and it's going to be very painful."

In August he filed a lawsuit against the city of New York asking the city to come up with a plan to make Central Park safe for people with disabilities. . . . The lawsuit asks that further safety provisions be made for people with disabilities. It does not ask for money.

Bernstein is staying at the New York Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue while undergoing outpatient rehabilitation at Mt. Sinai.

His goal, he told Kelly, is to "get back into the shape [I was] in before the accident."
