Society holds judges in such high esteem -- particularly when their title is State Supreme Court Justice.

So it's all the more surprising when one is accused of fraud.

Ross Jones of WXYZ reports that the U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit has filed a civil complaint accusing Michigan Supreme Court Justice Diane M. Hathaway and her husband of fraud, and the feds are going after her $750,000 Florida home.

The civil complaint alleges that Hathaway and her husband schemed to transfer property out of their names and hide asests -- all to make sure a short sale on their Grosse Pointe Park home  went through.

By showing they had less assets, the shortsale forgave $600,000 in debt Hathaway and her husband would have had to pay the bank, WXYZ reports.

Jones reports that the feds accused her of transferring the Florida property out of her name and into a stepdaughter’s name while she was seeking the short sale.

The move by the feds comes weeks after reports that the FBI was investigating the matter.
