City Council member JoAnn Watson's request Tuesday that President Barack Obama bail out Detroit because so many Detroiters voted for the president's re-election is spreading across the nation today, especially via rightwing web sites.
Conservatives were laughing at, and criticizing, Watson on The Drudge Report, which links to the Fox 2 story, rightmichigan.com and chicksontheright.com, among other sites. Watson's comments play into the idea that is popular on the right, and with failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney, that Democrats want handouts from big government.
Another site that covers media matters, mediaite.com, also gave Watson's comments top billing.
Watson said Tuesday the citizens support of Obama in last month's election was enough reason for the president to bailout the struggling the city.
"Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that," said Watson. "Of course, not just that, but why not?"
"After the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C. He came home with some bacon," said Watson. "That's what you do."
