Risky Fad: Salt And Ice Challenge Burns Teen Thrill-Seekers

December 27, 2012, 2:58 PM

Some teens are trying a dangerous trend that can cause skin burns, Paul Tutman of WDIV reports.

It's called the salt and ice challenge. And the results could be painful or cause serious injuries.

"What they do is they take salt and they lay it on a layer of skin and than they press ice down on it and in doing so it decreases the freezing point, which is normally 32 degrees Fahrenheit for ice, and it lowers that," says Dr. Ryan Shear of Botsford Hospital.

He and colleagues have seen teenage boys with first-degree, second-degree and sometimes third-degree skin burns from the challenge, according to Tutman.
