Is Detroit just getting more and more dangerous as the number of police officers dwindles?

George Hunter and Mike Wikinson of the Detroit News report that homicides in Detroit increased in 2012 by about 10 percent. As of Sunday, there had been at least 379, up from 344 last year.

The per capita figure put Detroit at the top of the nation's 20 most populous cities, the News reports.

The reporters noted that "Detroit residents are more likely to be killed now than nearly 40 years ago when the city was known as the Murder Capital."
