Emotional Showdown Over Belle Isle At Detroit City Council Today

January 28, 2013, 9:19 PM

Detroit City Council is headed to a showdown Tuesday over whether Detroit will lease Belle Isle to the state in a long-term deal that would transform the island into a state park.

A much-awaited vote that had been set for Tuesday's City Council meeting was pulled off the table at a public hearing Monday in a last-minute maneuver by council members Kwame Kenyatta and JoAnn Watson.

The council will have to take two votes today: One will be to put the deal back on the agenda and would require six of nine members of the council, and if it's unclear if the votes are there. The second vote would be  on the proposal.

If a vote on the proposal is delayed, the state could decide not to move ahead with the lease.
