State vs. 4 Local School Teams: 'The Use of American Indian Imagery ... Must Cease'

February 08, 2013, 5:46 PM

Michigan wants to end a tradition for the Warriors of Brother Rice in Bloomfield Hills, the Chiefs of Plymouth-Canton High, the Chieftains of Utica High and the Big Reds, as Cippewa Valley Schools' teams are called.

If the Department of Civil Rights gets its way, Native American mascots at those schools and 33 other districts will be banished. The state agency urges the feds to outlaw "American Indian mascots, names, nicknames, slogans, chants and/or imagery" at private or public schools, Tim Martin reports at MLive. here with images of their sports logos. Nicknames include Redmen, Mohwaks, Braves and Indians.

Colleges and universities aren't targeted. Yet.
