Is voter fraud a serious problem in Michigan?
It's a partisan issue, as Democrats often charge Republicans targeting alleged voter fraud mask attempts to suppress turnout by minorities and low-income people who largely vote Democratic. Republicans insist they want to make the system safe.
The issue came back on the table Tuesday after a state audit showed about 1,500 votes cast by dead people and prisoners during a period of less than three years.
The Secretary of State's Office responded to the audit by saying each example cited by Auditor General Thomas McTavish involved clerks accidentally crossing incorrect names off voter lists. The secretary of state said not one example was the result of voter fraud.
But dead people and prisoners aren't supposed to be on voter lists.
