Governor Appoints Macomb Judge to Replace Disgraced Supreme Court Justice Hathaway

February 27, 2013, 2:44 PM

That didn't take too long.

The Detroit News reports that Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday announced the appointment of Macomb County Circuit Judge David F. Viviano to replace Judge Diane Hathaway, who recently pleaded guilty to mortgage fraud.

Viviano (pictured here) was elected to the Macomb bench in 2006, and two years later was chosen by the state Supreme Court to participate in a pilot project to test reforms to the jury system in Michigan, according to a posting on the county website.

Prior to taking the bench, he worked at the law firms Dickinson Wright in Detroit and Jenner & Block in Chicago. He later went on to start his own firm in Mt. Clemens.

Interestingly, Viviano will be the fourth person currently on the Supreme Court to have worked at the law firm of Dickinson Wright. The others Justices are : Robert P. Young Jr., Brian K. Zahra and Mary Beth Kelly.

The News first reported the appointment in a news alert to cell phones before Snyder's scheduled 3 p.m. new conference.
