“We had been coming back to Michigan several times a year for running events and saw a real need for a retailer to serve the running population living and working within the city,” says Justin Craig, who co-owns the store with downriver-native Alia Polsgrove.

The couple moved to West Village, a neighborhood on Detroit's lower east side, in December after living in Seattle, where Craig helped open the West Seattle Runner store.

Setting up shop has gone "far better than I could have ever hoped for," according to Craig. "So many people in the neighborhood have been happy to see something in the building."

The store is attached to the Willy's Overland Lofts, named for the for Willy's Overland automobile company that used to occupy the building. Shinola is expected to open in a neighboring space this summer.

RUNdetroit will celebrate its grand opening Saturday with fully stocked shelves and a group run/walk followed by treats from Avalon Bakery and Motor City Brewing Works and yoga courtesty of Be Nice Yoga.
