Citing unspecified "security" concerns, Matty Moroun's Detroit International Bridge Company canceled the annual "Bike the Bridge" event organized by cycling enthusiasts on both sides of the border.

Organizers apparently received word in late May that the Ambassador Bridge ride, which had been scheduled for July 14, would not be allowed to take place.

Windsor Star: Kari Gignac, chair of the Windsor Bicycling Committee which helps organize the event, said the announcement came out of the blue at the end of May. The group, along with Tour de Troit, which hosts bicycling tours in Detroit, had set the date for July 14 and even received confirmation from the bridge company, Gignac said.

“They don’t really give any specific reasons,” Gignac said of the news, which she received via email from the organizers of Tour de Troit.

Gignac told the Star the Windsor Bicycling Committee is hopeful they can re-launch the event in 2014.

Perhaps by then the mass of Canadian and U.S. border security personnel can ready themselves for the potential dangers of roughly 200 Canadian and American citizens riding bicycles in a recreational event.
